Solar Cadastre: mapping and optimizing solar energy usage for long-term sustainability

The “Solar Cadastre” project, promoted by Wesii under the Liguria ERDF Regional Programme 2021–2027, aims to support the Liguria Region in its energy transition process through the creation of a regional digital solar cadastre, based on high-resolution data and advanced geospatial analysis technologies.

The initiative aims to maximize the exploitation of the Ligurian territory’s solar energy potential through experimental development activities. These include acquiring stereoscopic imagery, generating three-dimensional digital models (Digital Twins), and developing advanced algorithms to automatically identify buildings and surfaces most suitable for installing photovoltaic systems.

By integrating satellite technologies, geospatial analysis, machine learning algorithms, and digital platforms, the project enables the objective and standardized calculation of the installable photovoltaic potential on buildings. This provides a concrete tool to support energy planning, public policies, and investment decisions in the renewable energy sector.

The Solar Cadastre represents a strategic asset for the region, capable of contributing to reducing reliance on external energy sources, improving regional energy security, and accelerating decarbonization processes, in line with European environmental sustainability goals.

The project is co-funded by the European Union – European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) under the Liguria ERDF PR 2021–2027, reflecting the joint commitment of the European Union and the Liguria Region to promoting technological innovation and more sustainable territorial development.
